It has been a very different start to the new year.. However, children in Year 2 have still been eager to take part in new learning and try their very best to complete everything at home. We have been learning about Polar Regions in our Topic and found out interesting facts about what life is like Svalbard, which is an Island near Norway. We learnt about a little town called 'Longyearben'. We found out that they have very colourful houses because it is so dark there and that they sometimes travel around on something called a 'skidoo' which is basically a snow mobile. In English, we wrote Persuasive letters because the felt tips in our classroom had quit! We hadn't been treating them very well so we needed to convince them to come back. In science, we focused on living things and habitats. We learnt about food chains, micro habitats in the UK and went on scavenger hunts to find living things in our gardens! In Art we focused on the colour blue and went on colour walks/hunts to find different shades. We then used our knowledge of shades to create arctic scenes.
Spring 1 2021It has been a very busy and eventful half term in Year 2. \r\nWe have been learning all about new and old toys and how they have changed over their years. We began our Topic by encouraging parents and grandparents to send in pictures of their favourite toys from when they were children. This sparked some interesting conversations amongst the children and allowed us to identify the changes over time. In science, we have continued with our learning surrounding everyday materials and their properties. We explored more materials by twisting, bending and stretching them. We then recorded the evidence and discussed what objects we could make out of them. In English we read the story ‘Old Bear’ and retold the story using Talk 4 Writing. Children also wrote some excellent character descriptions using adjectives and expanded noun phrases. \r\nYear 2 put on a super performance of the Nativity alongside Year 1 and Reception. This was sent to family members to watch at home. It hopefully brought some well needed Christmas spirit to everyone! It certainly brought it to school! Whitby completed some lovely water colours in Provision that really wowed the staff! \r\nYear 2 also had some mischievous elves in their classrooms.. Every day the children would find them somewhere different, sometimes leaving messages or a challenge. It brought so much excitement to our mornings. \r\nOur new Topic in Spring 1 will be ‘Polar Explorers’ where we will learn all about cold climates. Our English focus will be based around the book ‘The Crow’s Tale’. Our science focus will be Habitats and living things. Lots to look forward to in the New Year! \r\n
Autumn 2 2020It has been a lovely first term back at school. Whitby and St Mary's have made an excellent start to their Year 2 school year. Mrs Skeet and Mr Arundale are so PROUD of every single child that has displayed perseverance, determination and bravery in their first term back at school. rnrnIn English our focus has been 'George and the Dragon'. Children have done some excellent sentence writing around the main characters and settings in the story using adjectives, simile's, alliteration, subordination and synonyms. Our focus in Maths has been place value, working out the tens and ones in numbers and using a part whole model to work out number bonds. We have also looked at number sequences too. rnrnIn science we have been building castles and making 'boulders' to destroy the castles in order to develop our understanding of everyday materials. rnrnBoth classes have enjoyed Martial Arts lessons and iMedia with Junior Jam.rnrnrnWhitby have also enjoyed music lessons on a Wednesday with Mr Duffy. They have learnt how to play the ukulele.rnrnrn
