It isn't always easy to categorise state of matter, especially when the state of matter changes with the temperature from your hand. We had great fun exploring and discussing the state of matter whilst getting a little messy!
Is it a solid, liquid or a gas?To put ourselves into the characters shoes we went out onto our school field and worked together to build our own city using the natural resources we had available - just like Romulus and Remus will have had to do when building Rome. We had great fun and decided that building a city wouldn't be a very easy job, especially when you don't have any tools to help!
Empathising with charactersWe read the story of Romulus and Remus. After mapping out key events of the story, we collaborated and retold the story thinking carefully about our voices and body actions.
Performing the story of Romulus and RemusWe visited Horsforth Library where we participated in a coding workshop. We created a character who had been caught in a shipwreck. Our character had to make lots of decisions to survive. Using our coding skills we navigated our Sphero around the island to tell the story.
Coding workshopWe debated and worked together to create a list of where we felt services within our local environment should be prioritised. We found that each group had different prioritise for different reasons.
How should the local government organise services? We collaborated and researched the history of Sikh Guru's. We presented our findings to the class.
Researching Gurus lineageIn Maths we have been using place value counters to help us understand how to regroup values in subtraction. We also used place value counters to represent the values of digits in a number.
Using Place Value countersToday in PE we started our new unit of work in PE focusing on Orienteering. We learned to use a map of the school grounds to locate different check points. Throughout the weeks we will be learning to read co-ordinates on maps whilst solving problems. At first we didn't understand why this was PE because we were reading maps but because of all the running we did, we were exhausted by the end. Our hearts were certainly pumping much faster.
Orienteering in PEFountains class hopped on the bus to Pizza Express in Headingley where they participated in a pizza making workshop. Led by a member of Pizza Express' staff, we thought about how to be hygienic and explored how to prepare a savoury food. We then had great fun eating our final products.
A trip to Pizza Express for Food technologyIn D&T we were given the task to recreate a Victorian room with a light bulb that lit-up. We investigated alternative materials we could use for wires, we explored and research Victorian living rooms, we planned and designed a successful circuit and interior design before we made our final products. Once we had finished, we evaluated our product and the process. One of the biggest problems we faced was that the light-bulb didn't like when we included a switch. We thought this was because too much electricity was being lost when it transferred from one component of the circuit to the next. We problem solved this by removing a hand-made circuit and using our fingers as the switch which pressed the wires to the power source (the battery). We ensured we insulated our circuit using electrical tape.
Victorian light-up boxes in Design and TechnologyIn Science we were investigating the components needs to create a light bulb light-up in a circuit. As we investigated we discussed we needed a power source, this came from our battery.
