Learning  »  Art & DT

At St Margaret’s Primary School, our vision is to provide a DT and Art curriculum which enables children to develop their design, making and evaluating skills. To achieve this, we encourage practical and hands on experiences to enhance the children’s learning and engagement. Our aim is that through learning Art and DT children will be creative and be able to make meaningful links with the outside world. We work hard to break down preconceptions amongst teachers and pupils as to what drawing or sculpture (for example) is or might be. Preconceptions can stifle creativity. If we take the lid off art and design we can allow the subject to flourish. Experimentation, risk, and innovation should be encouraged.

The National Curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
