Exploring Plants

This term we will be learning about plants and trees. One of our objectives is to be able to identify and name some common plants so today we made our identification sheet and went on a hunt around school to see if we could find some. We not only looked at the plants but used our senses knowledge from our learning from last term to explore the plants smell and feel.

Giacometti Sculptures

This term we have been looking at the work of sculptor Giacometti. We looked at some pictures of his work and discussed how his sculptures were of peoples shadows and that they often were very thin with stretched bodies. We decided to make our own sculptures of Stick Man from our class story using foil in the style of Giacometti.

Staff in Year 1
Miss Cairns and Miss Smith are the Class Teachers in year 1. Miss Cairns teaches full time in Coverham Abbey and Miss Smith teaches full time in Easby Abbey. Other adults who work in Year 1 are Mrs Hiley, Miss Croft, Mrs Owen and Mrs Wood.
Our topic this Spring term is Wild Woods. In this term we will be learning all about woodlands and the plants and trees that grow there.  In maths we will be beginning to learn about multiplication and division through practical activities both in and outside of the classroom. We will also continue to learn to tell the time and use non-standard units to measure.
In literacy our key texts will be:
- Stick Man
- Into the Forest
- A variety of non ficiton books about the rainforest

Based on these texts, we will be writing wanted posters for the missing Stick Man, character descriptions for some of the fairytale characters from Into the Forest and using the non fiction books to identify plants as part of our science.
